PIAGET'S DEVELOPMENTAL THEORY: AN OVERVIEW

Jean Piaget is generally recognized as the preeminent developmental psychologist of the twentieth century. His work investigating the growth of intelligence from infancy through adolescence is basic to an understanding of child and cognitive psychology. Because he opened new fields of inquiry, Piaget had to create a new vocabulary for his discoveries; his concepts are not easily understood from reading about them. In this film Piaget’s student, Dr. David Elkind, introduces the research methods and terminology of Piaget’s theories with demonstrations and apt real-life examples enabling students to more easily understand the concepts involved. Course Description

Diversity and Learners is focused on the subject of learners and the diversity of learning in school and classroom settings particularly in relation to the study of effective teaching.

A secondary focus will be on implications for other helping relationships involving coaching, counseling and parenting.

Over the course of the semester, we will consider the student as learner from the standpoint of different types of as well as different assumptions about learning. We will also examine learner differences and diversity of learning in relation to; developmental changes in childhood and adolescence, selected topics in classroom management and evaluation, and multicultural and special education issues.

Students are required to participate in a field experience. This course is designed for transfer from OCTC & MTC to USC- Columbia's College of Education - Department of Instruction Teacher Education.
